Winter Camp Recap

Perfect weather, talented young players, and experienced local coaches headlined the Tommy Hutton Baseball Academy’s 2019 Winter Skills Camp. Held from December 30-January 3 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, over 60 players took part in the THBA’s 19th annual New Year’s skill development program. MLB player Brian Schneider (pictured) teamed up with St. Louis Cardinals prospect Evan Mendoza and local coaches Brian Justine and Frank Torre to deliver five days of action packed skill development.

“Listening to and learning from a variety of experienced coaches provides a great opportunity for young players to learn and figure out what works best for them. This camp was a tremendous success from that standpoint!” commented THBA Director Brian Justine.

In addition to popular skill development sessions focusing on throwing, fielding and hitting, Justine and his staff spent time each day covering the finer points of the game. Bunting, sliding, cuts & relays, baserunning, leads and steals and getting out of the way of a pitch thrown too far inside are among the other topics covered during the week.

“We work hard to cover topics that don’t seem to be getting as much attention in today’s recreation and travel programs. We’re trying to develop well rounded players,” added Justine.

The week wrapped up n Friday 1/3 with an awards presentation inside the RDCS Cool Zone. Jack Peyton, Garrett Vonderhaar, and Ray Aguliera took home Player of the Week honors. Rocco Albury, Gavin Zelikoff, and Dylan Johnson walked away with the Hustle Award. Jacob Glassgold, Ike Tobin, and Jack Kelly won the HR Derby while Tobin, Avery Peterson, and Jackson Zetner won the MLB Pitch, Hit and Run competition.

The THBA returns to action over Spring Break, March 23-27, 2020. Registration is open for this very popular camp and is open to the first 60 players to register.
